John Lydon’s influential U.K. post-punk band Public Image Ltd is to return for a five-date British tour in December after a 17-year hiatus.
The Sex Pistols frontman has brought late-1980s members Lu Edmonds and Bruce Smith back for the dates, which coincide with the 30th anniversary of the experimental groups’s “Metal Box” album. METAL BOX WAS AWESOME. But, from what I’ve read about Mr. Lydon (No Irish, No Blacks, No Dogs) and from his Bloc Party beat down at Primavera Sound last summer, I would’ve bet that we’d get no action from PiL here in the states. But in an interview with the Guardian on Sept. 7th, Lydon said that PiL is an “unfinished work which is set to continue for some time.” So maybe there is hope? He goes on to say that “The Sex Pistols were too rigid [...] PiL allowed me to express proper emotions.”
(Sounds weird coming from him if you’ve ever read that book I mentioned before. And if you haven’t, maybe you should. I read it when I was like 12 because I was obsessed with The Sex Pistols – it’ll probably give you more insight on the “punk movement” than any of the other books you’ve read. Anyway, I woulda bet a bunch of dollars that Lydon would never milk PiL for cash – but, fortunately for us, it looks like a milking is in the stars. Let’s just hope he doesn’t ask Kings of Leon to open up for ‘em and then beat down their lead singer.)
