Fierce Creatures emerged from the scorching Fresno, CA summer of 2009. Abandoning past musical undertakings that never quite seemed to fit, the band came together to build an identity free of limitations – an identity focused on the joy of undiluted music. Guitars and keys drive their tunes, while mandolin, harmonica, and bells accentuate them with chanting choruses and a miscellany of percussion. The product: cultivated art-pop that can only be called Fierce Creatures. Dig the clips and tunes below, and if you’re into it you can snag the debut EP I Mostri Feroci here. Fierce Creatures is: Continue reading Band To Watch: Fierce Creatures…
Even though I’m not going back to school this time around, my summer is almost over, and like the one before it, this one had a soundtrack. Last summer’s playlist was made up of Trojan Records box sets, Easy Star Allstars, and Leftover Crack (C4 can definitely vouch for that!), but his summer I’ve been vibing on more exotic electronic music that has been (justly) overrun by Diplo. In case you weren’t aware, Diplo is a fantastic producer who seems to surround himself with the coolest and most talented musicians from all corners of the earth. (i.e. Curtis Continue reading Skinny Dip(lo): Summer Mixtape Vol. 2…
Fareed and Connor are Headless Horseman, and you should give a shit about that because Headless Horsemen makes some good tunes. Truth be told, I don’t know shit about electronic music. I’m not gonna lie. I mean, the mash-up remixy what sample is this kinda electro is not something on which I profess to be the oracle. But I do know when shit sounds good, and if after you listen to the track Wavlngth you can say you aren’t into it then you probably shouldn’t be reading this blog like, ever, cause this sound kinda embodies exactly what Continue reading Band To Watch: HDLSS HRSMN…
Officially, “The Bowl welcomes the longed-for return of post-punk messiahs Pavement for an amazing show of rock royalty that also includes the iconic and experimental sounds of Sonic Youth and heirs to the lo-fi throne No Age.” Damn. Heirs to the lo-fi throne? No Age must be pretty stoked. Seriously, and I say this with love, who the fuck cares about No Age when PAVEMENT AND SONIC YOUTH ARE PLAYING TOGETHER? I sure don’t. Um, count me in. And by “count me in” I actually meant to say “Please buy me tickets so I can go cause I Continue reading Pavement and Sonic Youth at the Hollywood Bowl…
Last night I discovered that I have three very different and totally awesome versions of The Beatles’ harmonica-pop gem from A Hard Day’s Night – “I Should Have Known Better.” It should go without saying that version 1 is, of course, the original. Version 2 is a great duet, by She & Him, who will be performing at the 2010 Lou Fest on August 29th in St. Louis. M. Ward and Zooey Deschanel alternate vocal lines over a laid-back, galloping beat with Hawaiian-inspired guitar slides. Totally different take on a classic track. My favorite is version 3, by Continue reading You should have known better, rude boy!…
I’ve been a little slow on the blog this summer, with good reason – dog, new job, no money, etc – but I figure it’s kind of my duty to kick you guys down with the details for this year’s FYF Fest, since I’ve done it pretty much every year…. The lineup was announced a week or 2 ago and includes some pretty awesome shit that we’ve written about in the past…. For starters, fucking UNBROKEN is on this years FYF lineup. Yeah, and I do mean the Life Love Regret UNBROKEN. What the fuck? My friend had Continue reading FYF Fest 2010 Is Just Around The Corner – Lineup, Etc….
Are we really here? Is this really happening? When we say that we never thought this day would come, we REALLY mean it. The rumor of a new Three Mile Pilot album has been circulating for over a decade, further fueling the mystery and mythology that has swirled around the San Diego trio since the 1997 release of what was thought to be their swan song, the enormously influential Another Desert, Another Sea. The new release is called The Inevitable Past Is The Future Forgotten and it’s the first Three Mile Pilot album in 13 years. It also Continue reading New Three Mile Pilot Album Coming This Fall…
If you know Curtis Jenkins, you should know he LOVES baile funk. Baile Funk, also called funk carioca, is a Brazilian dance music that originated in the favelas of Rio de Janeiro and is heavily influenced by 1980s Miami Bass music (like 2 Live Crew!) This is some serious party music, where thousands of young people gather together every weekend to shake their asses. Here’s a clip from Diplo’s documentary Favela On Blast, a GREAT introduction to Rio’s baile funk counter-culture. Check the links that follow for more clips: Baile Funk dos Prazeres_(Favela on Blast) from Leandro HBL Continue reading Curtis Jenkins Loves Baile Funk!…
