Are we really here? Is this really happening? When we say that we never thought this day would come, we REALLY mean it. The rumor of a new Three Mile Pilot album has been circulating for over a decade, further fueling the mystery and mythology that has swirled around the San Diego trio since the 1997 release of what was thought to be their swan song, the enormously influential Another Desert, Another Sea.
The new release is called The Inevitable Past Is The Future Forgotten and it’s the first Three Mile Pilot album in 13 years. It also happens to be the first 3MP album to be written, performed, recorded and produced entirely by the original three members in their own home studios. As such, it is the most uncompromising album since their inception. Many of the songs on The Inevitable Past bear the unmistakable stamps of Pinback and The Black Heart Procession, and it’s this circular influence that makes the album so brilliant. Instead of a proper hiatus, 3MP’s progression was charted vicariously through its members’ other groups.
Dude, seriously, did any of you ever SEE The Black Heart Procession? That band was fucking amazing. I saw them at the Knitting Factory in LA (RIP) when I was 16 and their two and a half hour set stands out as one of the best musical performances I had the opportunity to witness during my teenage years. I heart these dudes. Three Mile Pilot‘s The Inevitable Past Is The Future Forgotten is out 9/28/10 via Temporary Residence Ltd.
