New Portishead [Video] ‘Machine Gun’ and [MP3] ‘The Rip’

Portishead - Third Boxed Set

I was so overly excited to hear the new Portishead record, Third, which is scheduled for release on April 29th in the US, that I jumped the gun and figured out how to download the whole thing for free. Two weeks ago. I KNOW, I’M SORRY! I kinda feel like I ruined Christmas or something, BUT I JUST COULDN’T WAIT. And you know what? I wish I had, because I totally spoiled the surprise and made the entire thing utterly anti-climactic. I didn’t get the chance to get stoked when the band made the first single off the album, Machine Gun, available for purchase/download through their website last night, and I didn’t even bother to take a gander at the video (also made available yesterday, by login), which isn’t too amazing, but god damn is that song good. I’ve listened to the album several times but not until I saw this video did ANY of it It make me feel like I was listening to Portishead in 10th grade again. Which is something stupidly sentimental and I won’t even pretend that I can actually make any of you understand what I mean. (but does anyone know where the sample at the end of ‘Western Eyes‘ comes from?)

Anyway, yea, so I downloaded the whole, highly anticipated album illegally. Check out this crazy boxed set that’s available for pre-order, which totally ensures that I’m gonna make the purchase:

  • double vinyl copy of Third
  • etched “Machine Gun” 12″
  • limited edition art print by Nick Uff
  • P-shaped USB stick featuring Third and four films
  • exclusive access to other extras to be unveiled throughout the year.

Oh and P.S.

For a couple hours you really did have to enter your email address to watch the ‘Machine Gun’ video, but some idiot took the fun out of it and posted the whole thing on youtube, allowing you to be too lazy to click your mouse.
