Monsters of Folk Make Me Remember Why I Loved Fevers and Mirrors

In the spirit of super groups (see previous post), the weapon brings you Monsters of Folk. The name would be fitting if the band consisted of Will Oldham, Jeff Mangum, and Samuel Beam, but it doesn’t. Members Conor Oberst, M. Ward, Jim James, and Mike Mogis are Monsters of Folk – and I’ll be honest – they make me remember why I LOVED THE CRAP out of Fevers and Mirrors so hard (yes, I just said I loved something “so hard”….) when I was 16. The reason: BECAUSE ITS REALLY FREAKING GOOD. Period. And I’m really surprised that I think that, too. I mean because as a solo artist, Conor Oberst is a little whiney and really melodramatic, and all these stupid girls with bad taste in music really like him because he’s cute. And M. Ward has always struck me as a little too self-assured for my tastes. He’s good, but not something I’ve taken much time to get into. Together, though, they are juuuuuuuuuuuuuust a scoche shy of perfection. And I can live with that. Hey Justin are you smiling yet?

With less than 2 weeks left until the release of their self-titled collaborative debut (due out September 22nd), Monsters of Folk reveal the album’s cover art and 3 full songs (“Say Please,” “Dear God (Sincerely MOF),” and “The Sandman, The Brakeman, and Me”). You can stream ‘em via Monsters of Folk on myspace (IM SORRY! I WISH I COULD LET YOU HAVE ‘EM HERE BUT I DON’T WANT TO RUIN IT.) Go listen though, seriously. Cause all you’re gonna get from me now are my favorite tracks from a couple artists I mentioned a few lines above.
