I’ve got something spectacular to report! An extended family member just got a write up on Spin.com! I know, I know, spin posted warped tour dates like three years ago that swore Des Moines was in Ohio, but that doesn’t REALLY scrap their credibility. A mere oversight, right?
So who’s the family member? A one miss Alex Lilly, whom you may know from The Bird and the Bee (they played at Coacella this year) or Colorforms, and who now goes by the much more fitting pseudonym of Obi Best. She has a voice like an angel AND a bell all rolled into one and it reminds me of Broadcast and Stereolab and sugar and spice and everything nice. Plus she’s sweet as pie.
Catch her live this Sunday evening on the last night of her August residency at the Tangiers Restaurant in Los Feliz. Take note: there is a small cover charge but Obi Best understands that some of you’d rather buy a pack of smokes than support some stellar local tunes so if you shoot her a myspace message you’ll probably earn yourself one of the limited spots on her guest list. Oh and what’s more – if you go to the official Social Science Recordings website and sign up the REAL mailing list, you’re automatically entered to win copies of Miss Obi Best’s Top 5 albums – these are pretty good too – as well as an advance physical copy of her new record – “Capades,” which debuted on August 25th.
