The Stone Roses are pretty underrated. Seriously. Try to find a free download of “Standing Here” on the interwebz. It ain’t easy. In fact, I couldn’t find one ANYWHERE. Like 500 expired links and 30 second clips, and in my (not-so-humble) opinion it’s their best song.
Anyway, Flashbacks will include a little bio of the artists they feature from now on. Brief history of the Stone Roses:
The Stone Roses were an English alternative rock band formed in Manchester in 1984. They were one of the pioneering groups of the Madchester movement that was active during the late 1980s and early 1990s. The band’s most notable lineup consisted of vocalist Ian Brown, guitarist John Squire, bassist Gary “Mani” Mounfield, and drummer Alan “Reni” Wren. The band released their debut album, The Stone Roses, in 1989. The second record, Second Coming, didn’t come out until 1994. Soon after the release of the second album, the Stone Roses parted ways. In March of 2009, the UK’s Daily Mirror reported that “sources” had confirmed a Stone Roses reunion that would span 21 dates in 2009. The report was given sufficient credence to be repeated on various music news sites but no official announcement ever materialized, and the claim was denied by both John Squire and Ian Brown.
Ian Brown was interviewed on Nation Radio and in response to the reunion question he offered the following quote: “The chances are slim and slim’s out of town”. Ha ha ha, funnyman.
Even though it was basically a comp of stuff we’d already heard, September’s 20th Anniversary Stone Roses release got some pretty awesome reviews. I think popmatters summed it up best:
Imagine if you will: an album re-release that actually gets everything right, making an already-classic album sound even better than before, deepening our understanding as to what made it so iconic.
i want to smash my soul on your brain
