Vivian Girls : Brooklyn's Darger Darlings

Though they take their name from the little girl heroes of Outsider artist Henry Darger’s 19,000+ paged literary epic, The Story of the Vivian Girls in what is Known as the Realms of the Unreal, these Vivian Girls don’t sport tiny penises or butterfly wings. They do however, play music. Damn fine music.

As Darger mixed mediums (i.e. the tracing of various printed images, collage, and watercolor) to create unique landscapes, Vivian Girls combine lo-fi pop with girl-group harmonies, and merge shoegazey guitars with proto-punk sentiments. The result: you swoon while your head bobs. Current discography: s/t debut (scheduled for re-release on In The Red Records in the fall), two 7″s (Wild Eyes and Orphanage), and the upcoming, “I Can’t Stay,” scheduled to drop later this month.

In the meantime, you can catch the girls on tour just about everywhere, opening for just about everyone (who matters), like Sonic Youth, at the last show that will ever grace Williamsburg’s McCarren Park Pool, on August 30th, which will revert back to it’s original function after this show – it will once again be a pool that people can swim in.
