Brontez from Gravy Train – yes, the insane dude who screams about STD’s and nervousness at shows – has a new side project called The Young Lovers. The album was released Retard Disco (Bad dudes…), and its title makes it pretty obvious – this album is mos def a return to 80’s New Romanticism, with Punk Rock tendencies. Retard Disco bills the work as a response to the vast majority of queer artists moving toward pop/electronic sounds. They explain that “[e]veryone ran for a drum machine and opted to be the next Justin Timberlake. No probs. No shade. This just left the playhouse empty.” Ok… cooooooool….what?
Punk rock is like the classic mainstream way to voice dissent; way to really shake up whats happening…. not. Whatever.
Anyway, listen to “I’m Losing My Edge”:
Rumor has it that the first music video will be released on Tuesday, August 5th (this week!), and as soon as I find it I will of course post it. Until then, watch a short clip from a recent Younger Lovers performance in SF. Apparently the drummer used a tree branch he found outside…
The whole project seems tragically desperate to scratch that romantically punk rock itch, and I’ll be honest: parts of it work, but whenever I remember what they’re actually going for and how hard they’re trying to get there, it just makes me fucking laugh. You be the judge!
