So I went to the Eagle (awesome bear bar with magical possibilities lingering just about everywhere, especially near the urinals) to see a Samnation/Samuel Roy show and totally un-expectantly saw a young and fresh electro act called No New York, they opened for Sam, the band shares its name with an awesome compilation produced by Brian Eno (one of my all time faves) and put out by Island’s sub-label Antilles, the compilation features tracks by two of my oldskool faves: James Chance and Teenage Jesus And the Jerks. I talked to the producer of the present No New York project and he said, “No New York was started to be speedcore, but slowly developed into electro/bassline. No New York is building a reputation among the electro scene in LA and SF, we’re just bringing the fresh new beats.” And the main reason it’s working so well has a lot to do with Lady Lay on vocals. At the show she said, “I write and collaborate with whoever I can find and see inspiration in everything. No New York rocks.”
Unfortunately, she didn’t sing at the actual show, she just danced around with the rest of the audience as her tracks spun from the laptop. Note to the future, shows are much more interesting when performances actually take place, watching lap tops is boring.
For shits and giggles check out Yes New York then check out No New York’s tracks and if you like them be sure to download their smartly titled mixtape, “No Rave No Way” < ----that's the link.
