I’m not exactly sure where the party lines are drawn when it comes to the late, great, Icky Boyfriends – I’m pretty sure that unless you’re me, like 10 of my friends, my high school sweetheart, really love Jad Fair or the Instant Automatons, or you’re in a psych ward, you’ll probably get freaked out by an 18 second song with the lyrics, “I wanna take some PCP and kill some PI-IIGS, I wanna take some PCP and beat up on some f**king pi-igs… ” personally, I’d like the ringtone.
For those unaware, Icky Boyfriends were a San Francisco band from the early 90s that played whatever they wanted to play and everyone (or barely anyone) just kinda dealt with it. That explains why you’ve never heard of them till now, but really wish you had. But seriously If you don’t know ‘em, get to – they’re awesome like Carey’s Problem and almost as under the radar, too. I guess they used to get a lot of radio play on college stations in the East Bay, but I never woulda heard of them if it weren’t for the coca cola points I’ve been texting in all year. There’s not much to buy from the coke store with fewer than 500 points so I redeemed them for a month’s subscription to Rhapsody, and typed in Jad Fair. Yes, I’m on a Jad Fair kick. Anyway, after I couple clicks – past Daniel Johnston, Vivian Girls, Times New Viking, etc. – I found myself at the Icky Boyfriends. Now you find yourself at them too.
I guess this record, A Love Obscene, was re-issued in 2005 – double disc with like a gazillion tracks. Someone should buy it for me cause even though I have a job I’m broke, and this track was a BITCH to get ahold of. Love it, or give me a dollar!
