I get really, really skeptical when bands who send me music to review list REALLY GOOD artists under their “Influences.” So I was immediately expecting an aural atrocity when I visited Daddy Lion’s myspace page and they had the following artists listed as major influences: Husker Du, Dinosaur Jr., Iggy Pop, Bowie, Buzzcocks, Joy Division, Leonard Cohen, Sonic Youth, T. Rex, Buddy Holly, Beatles, Pavement, and Modest Mouse. The majority of that list would absolutely fall into my top 50 favorite artists ever and I hate when bands that totally suck SWEAR they sound like something that totally doesn’t suck. But Daddy Lion kinda did themselves justice.
I mean, I’m not maintaining that they’re AS GOOD AS anyone on that list, but they do kinda sound like ‘em and they do kinda sound good. Better than about 90% of the indie-ish pop rock that tends to infiltrate my inbox. Have a listen:
