Quinn Walker or some suckers or something. Listen up!

DUDE! I LIKE THIS! I’m so totally stoked right now cause I haven’t been into ANYTHING AT ALL and it has been HORRIFIC. I’ve barely even been able to crank out a really shitty post about some even shittier tunes in like almost a month. So let me start by thanking you, Quinn Walker. I [...]

Little Bear - Army of Trees EP
Posted in: FANTASTIC PICKS
So after spending the whole weekend in the hospital, I was delighted to find that I was pretty much the only person who had neglected the website. To everyone who sent me anything to review over the past couple days - I will most definitely get to it. First on the list, because it was the best of the bunch and I probably would have done a post eventually, solicited or un - Little Bear. I got this email and it said something about how if you like Andrew Bird, Iron & Wine, Akron/Family, or Sufjan Continue reading Little Bear - Army of Trees EP
Static Noise and Icelandic Blow Jobs - Kid Twist
Posted in: FANTASTIC PICKS
The good people of Iceland have proven time again they know how to produce breathtaking experimental, raucous, and avant-garde sounds. Kid Twist is a must-hear and definitely a must-watch, up-and-coming band and they are tearing up record studios in Iceland right now. Their music is noisy, static-ridden, angry, dark, and brooding surf-rock that makes me want to smoke way to many cigarettes and punch holes in my wall. I fucking love it! Kid Twist is unsigned and relatively obscure, so make sure you check out their myspace page Continue reading Static Noise and Icelandic Blow Jobs - Kid Twist
Highland Park’s Secret Alphabet
Posted in: FANTASTIC PICKS
Eddie Figueroa just SOUNDS like an important name. Like he could be a boxer or a car salesman or the varsity quarterback - but he's not. He's the brains behind the operation referred to as Secret Alphabet. The oddly shoe-gazey, dream-poppy, yet somehow still jam-bandish foursome is made up of some dudes from Highland Park, and you should totally swoop on their free mp3's before you check them out in September. Seriously, go see them now, cause I promise you that in December your way-too-indie pal is gonna be all, "Dude, there's Continue reading Highland Park's Secret Alphabet
Love At Second Listen - Dig The Mad Gregs
Posted in: FANTASTIC PICKS
I'm gonna admit something here but let me first say don't get all harshed by it. When I first listened to the Mad Gregs via their myspace, I was not impressed. I think it was when I was digging up the goods for the Aunt Dracula post I did last week - which you guys showed an overwhelming amount of love to, thanks for that from me and a punch in the stomach from your old Aunt D - anyway, I gave them a second listen and my re-assessment says… Continue reading Love At Second Listen - Dig The Mad Gregs
Aunt Dracula Punched Me In The Stomach
Posted in: FANTASTIC PICKS
Ok maybe he didn't, but dude, this shit's so fucking good it almost made me cry when I first heard it. I'm not kidding. I almost felt like it was laughing and screaming, "HAHA I PUNCHED YOU IN THE FACE!" and when I started crying, it took a cheap shot and socked me in the stomach. The dude from Aunt Dracula added me on myspace, and every once in a while something ACTUALLY compels me to look at the profiles I accept. This time I was thinking, "maybe I should… Continue reading Aunt Dracula Punched Me In The Stomach
The Punk, The Kiwi, and The Kakapo - Flying Nun Records
Posted in: FANTASTIC PICKS
Remember when you wanted to add that classic indie song to your Myspace, but after a quick search discovered the artist was so old and unpopular with the kids those days that YOU had to create a fan page and then YOU had upload the songs your damn self just to link a single track back to your profile? New Zealand's the Clean totally needed one of those fan pages. Real bad. Clean guitarist David Kilgour seemed to agree, and eventually sent a request for ownership of the new… Continue reading The Punk, The Kiwi, and The Kakapo - Flying Nun Records
500won Project - Um Han
Posted in: FANTASTIC PICKS
500won project was one of the greatest things to come out of my North Hollywood living, cockroach obsessing, non-studying, illegal downloading, veritably FUCKED UP brain (2 years ago. I've since recovered.) I think he may also be one of the greatest artists I've ever discovered via last.FM. Actually, I didn't find him on Last.fm. I'll explain, but first take note: in no way am I a major Mogwai fan.
Now we can proceed.
Like two years ago, I found a 'Sigur Ros/Mogwai' split indexed in some filesharing program. I was probably… Continue reading 500won Project - Um Han
The Party is on the West Coast - No New York
Posted in: FANTASTIC PICKS
So I went to the Eagle (awesome bear bar with magical possibilities lingering just about everywhere, especially near the urinals) to see a Samnation/Samuel Roy show and totally un-expectantly saw a young and fresh electro act called No New York, they opened for Sam, the band shares its name with an awesome compilation produced by Brian Eno (one of my all time faves) and put out by Island's sub-label Antilles, the compilation features tracks by two of my oldskool faves: James Chance Newer Posts »
